Kevin Magnussen admits he wanted to retire after losing out through the pit-stops at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Dane's race started poorly losing out to Daniel Ricciardo at Sainte Devote and got worse, eventually falling to 15th after a post-race penalty for clashing with Sergio Perez.

It was a decision to give up track position and pit under the Safety Car which wrecked Magnussen's race though, dropping him outside the top 10.

"I wanted the engine to blow up," the Haas driver said bluntly to Motorsport.com.

"It's disappointing to have a result like today when we've been so strong all weekend and the team has done an amazing job.

"They provided me with exactly the tools I needed to perform. We've just been really good this weekend.

"I just feel sorry for everyone, and I'm very disappointed for myself."

Teammate Romain Grosjean would bring a point home for the American outfit, but it was a disappointing follow-up to the progress made two weeks earlier in Barcelona.

"It's very easy to draw conclusions. Things are happening very quickly, you have to take decisions in split seconds, and sometimes it goes well, and sometimes it goes wrong," Magnussen said of the strategy call.

"You've got to give it to the guys, they're under a lot of pressure and I don't want to blame anyone. It's a disappointing one, for sure."
