Aron Canet (Estrella Galicia 0,0) pipped Adam Noroddin (SIC Racing Team) to the top spot in the closing minutes of FP2.

The session started on a drying track, and towards the end riders were able to come out on slick tyres. It did begin to rain once more towards the end of the session, leaving us clueless on how the weather will hold up for MotoGP FP2.

Enea Bastianini (Estrella Galicia 0,0) is having a much more confident weekend than he has done in the past. Bastianini seems to have struggled to get to grips with the machinery he is on this year, but it looks like his luck may finally be changing as we head into this weekend. He rounded out the top three in FP2, after finishing fourth in FP1.

A special mention should surely be given to Maria Herrera (AGR Team). She finished the session in seventh, but did sit in the top three for a while. Maria is proving to have practice pace - she constantly has positive practice sessions and sets some fast time. Unfortunately, she doesn't manage to translate it into race pace, which is important if she wants to secure a ride for next year.

'Mr Pole' Jorge Martin (Del Conca Gresini Moto3) will be siting out this weekend due to injury.

Hector Barbera (Reale Avintia Racing) surprisingly topped the time sheets in FP1, but Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) wasn't far behind. At the end of the session, Dovizioso took the top spot back off Barbera, but subsequently had his lap cancelled for exceeding track limits.

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) rounded out the top three, after a late lunge shot him further up the times.

The Ducatis went well here last year, but Barbera certainly wasn't the other Ducati we expected to see at the top. Jorge Lorenzo (the other factory Ducati) ended the session in ninth.

The weather is in doubt for this afternoon's session, with wet weather and thunderstorms forecast. The FP1 order could well be the order for Q2 tomorrow.

Rain temporarily halted play in FP1, as all riders headed back into the pits once the rain suddenly poured.

And once the rain came down the track became extremely slippy, with a lot of the riders dropping down at turn one. Francesco Bagnaia (Sky Racing Team VR46) went down first, setting off a chain of crashes, including a particularly bad one between Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) and Danny Kent, who is stepping in for the injured Marcel Schrotter at Dynavolt Intact GP. It looked as if Marquez' bike ran straight into Kent, and the Bri was taken to the medical centre for a check up.

FP1 was by far one of the most crash-filled sessions we have seen in Moto2 for a while. Almost all of the top riders went down at one point, with some crashing on more than one occasion and it was bizarre that the session wasn't red flagged.

Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) topped the times, from Dominique Aegerter (Kiefer Racing) and championship leader Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS).

The top ten:

  1. Miguel Oliveira- Red Bull KTM Ajo - 1:31.203
  2. Dominique Aegerter- Kiefer Racing +0.158
  3. Franco Morbidelli- EG 0,0 Marc VDS +0.180

  7. Axel Pons- RW Racing GP +0.863
  8. Fabio Quartararo- Pons HP40 +0.882
  9. Francesco Bagnaia- Sky Racing Team VR46 +0.914
  10. Thomas Luthi- CarXpert Interwetten +0.932

Joan Mir (Leopard Racing) returned to the Red Bull Ring on top form, after taking his maiden win at the Austrian track last year. Aron Canet (Estrella Galicia 0,0) had a solid run in second, finishing just 0.354 seconds behind Mir.

Marcos Ramirez (Platinum Bay Real Estate) continued to make his mark on the Moto3 field, ending the session in third, just 0.495 seconds behind the leader.

'Mr Pole' Jorge Martin (Del Conca Gresini Moto3) is returning from injury this weekend, after being forced to sit out the race in Brno as his injury was still giving him pain. He finished the session in seventh, a solid FP1 result with all things considered.

John McPhee (British Talent Team) ended FP1 in eighth, as he continues to pick up his podium form from the start of the year.
