Windsor: The F1 trend Verstappen started that is hurting American drivers

Veteran Formula 1 paddock member Peter Windsor believes a trend that began with Max Verstappen has hurt the chances for American drivers.

While the sport may now have an American team in Haas, not since Alexander Rossi in 2015 have the Stars and Stripes been represented by a driver on the grid.

And while there are several US racers now trying to make it up the ladder to F1, Windsor believes there's a reason when many top names from IndyCar and elsewhere haven't had a look-in.

''Teams don't look so much at different racing classes, but more at drivers who go through some of those classes and show talent in them," he said on his The Racers Edge YouTube series.

"That's actually exactly how Max Verstappen got into the sport and that's what other teams want to copy now.

''American drivers tend to finish their studies first and then it's already too late to breakthrough in Europe," Windsor added.

"However, teams should invest money in the careers of American talents, so that they also get a fair chance in Europe."

No doubt Liberty Media, who have been pushing to increase F1 interest in the States would be keen to see Windsor's suggestion come true.
