Silverstone is to honour Lewis Hamilton by renaming the current Formula 1 pit straight 'Hamilton Straight', it's been revealed.

This year, the Mercedes driver has become the statistical greatest of all-time, surpassing Michael Schumacher for the most F1 wins and tieing the German with seven world championships.

Hamilton is also the most successful driver in the history of the British Grand Prix with seven wins, six of which have come since 2014.

It is only fitting that Hamilton should join the likes of Senna and Schumacher to have a part of their home track named after them.

"I was delighted, in my capacity as President of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club), to share this news with Lewis today," said ex-McLaren and Red Bull driver David Coulthard.

"It is the first time in Silverstone's history that a part of the circuit has been named after any individual.

"Lewis has become a huge part of this history, and the directors of the Club and I felt there was no better way to mark this than to re-name the iconic pits straight in recognition of his record-breaking achievements.”
