Fernando Alonso has once again insisted he has not closed the door on a return to Formula 1 in the future.

Having become mired in the midfield with McLaren, the Spaniard decided to leave his seat at the British team but remains part of the setup in a new ambassadorial role, which will also see him test the 2019 car.

The problem Alonso always had in F1 though, was Mercedes and Ferrari didn't want him to disrupt their lead drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, while Red Bull focuses on promoting from within.

However: “If you have the opportunity to be with a top team with the possibility of winning, you will always say ‘yes’ because F1 is F1,” the double world champion told the Daily Express.

Fernando also claimed he would always maintain interest in a return, adding: “You’re always going to miss F1 because they are the fastest cars on the planet."

For now, though, Alonso has other priorities...

“I’ll do the remaining WEC races and Le Mans again, but my head is in Indianapolis and trying to win that race [the 500],” he said

“I know it’s the hardest of the three in the Triple Crown because I grew up in F1 and if you have a good car, you can win the championship.

“At Le Mans with Toyota we had a very good chance of winning because we had a better car, but Indianapolis is different.”
