There was a sense of optimism at Racing Point as upgrades saw both drivers in the top 10 during German Grand Prix practice.

Having sat in the lower half of the midfield for much of the season, the next two races are intended to signal a turnaround for the Silverstone-based outfit with the car getting an overhaul.

Hockenheim has seen the focus more at the rear of the car with a new slimmer engine cover, sidepods and, as Lance Stroll explained, weight reduction.

“It is good to see we are in the upper end of things for a change, it has been a while so it is always a good start to the weekend.” the Canadian, who was seventh fastest told AFP. 

“The car is very different here – she’s actually been on a diet! It is good and we have to keep it up.

“Days like this are always nice, but it’s a practice session and it doesn’t count for anything.”

Indeed, Stroll is looking to snap a 14-race streak of Q1 exits in Germany and may finally have the car capable of doing it.

As for Sergio Perez, he was slower than his teammate in both sessions but echoed the improvements made to the Racing Point car.

“When we look at our balance and our levels of pace, I think we have definitely done a good improvement – and the car is feeling better," said the Mexican.

“I think we can work around it a little bit better, but I think we have a lot of work to do in terms of balancing the car.”
