Alfa Romeo have been penalised 30 seconds after torque mapping irregularities at the start of the German GP.

Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi had finished seventh and eighth at Hockenheim, but have fallen foul of regulations relating to a driver driving the car alone and unaided.

The FIA report explains the torque demand was not delivered within the permitted 0.07s, with Giovinazzi's data reading a 0.3s delay and Raikkonen a 0.2s delay.

“This provided a more gradual application of the torque, which given the wet conditions was a potential advantage," it continued.

“Regardless of whether there was an actual advantage, the Stewards determined that this was a clear breach of the guidance given to the teams as to how this would be adjudicated.”

As a result, Lewis Hamilton moves upto ninth in the final standings, taking his lead over Valtteri Bottas in the championship to 41 points.

It also means Robert Kubica scores his and Williams' first point of the season in 10th, meaning every team has now scored a point this season.

While respecting the decision, Alfa Romeo has confirmed their intention to appeal.

"We believe we have the grounds and evidence to have it overturned," a tweet noted.
