Lewis Hamilton is hoping the new cars coming for 2021 will allow Formula 1 to remove the need for DRS.
As it stands, the FIA has suggested the new designs, which see a shift to ground effect aerodynamics, will still feature the mechanism which opens the rear wing flap but whether it will be permitted at races has yet to be determined.
Much of that could depend on the current talks between teams and Ross Brawn, the man who has led the project, as F1's motorsport director wants to limit aero development in a bid to avoid undoing the work done to allow for closer racing.
“I don’t know if they’re going to keep it in 2021. I would imagine they would, but those wings are going to be quite a bit bigger and hopefully will make following better, so maybe there won’t need it then," Hamilton told RaceFans.

The six-time F1 champion in waiting has been particularly vocal against DRS and explained why the aid has taken the fun out of racing.
“Some of the overtakes, you’re overtaking halfway down the straight and of course and it’s not as exciting,” he said. “You want to be doing it in a corner, launch it up the inside of another car.
“But that’s just the way it is. It doesn’t bother me, I still have to try and get in the position to be able to utilise it.”
