Lewis Hamilton is excited by the potential for better racing with Formula 1's new cars from 2021.

At the last race in Austin, Liberty Media presented the final agreed design and regulations in what is quite the step away from the current generation of machines.

Indeed, performance predictions suggest the new cars could be as much as three seconds slower than today, but if that is offset by more action, Hamilton is all for it.

“We got these great cars with great power and grip, but you can’t get close enough in the races,” he told the AP. “That means less excitement for all of you.

“That means we have to have DRS, which is a band-aid for the poor characteristics of the current regulations.

“But if it (the new car) does what it says on paper, it could be the best era of racing that we have seen in a long, long time.

“And I want to be there if it is the case because it will be another opportunity to show my abilities.”

F1 motorsport director Ross Brawn and his team claim the 2021 cars will only lose around 10-15% of their overall downforce compared to the over 50% of now.

This is through the use of greater ground effect rather than the reliance on both front and rear wings, which have been greatly simplified.

And along with the predicted racing benefits, Romain Grosjean says the new cars also look better.

“I think they look cool,” the Haas driver said.

“I think they look futuristic without being away from what Formula One has been known for as a race car. I’m very happy with the way they look.

“Performance-wise, we’ll need to wait and see what the track brings and if it’s got all the desired effects.

“Generally, I’m pleased with what I’ve seen so far.”
