Marc Marquez was tempted to play it safe at Misano and value the 20 points for P2, but then another thought crossed his mind - the value of the five extra points on offer should the title go down to the wire. The highest-placed title contender at the time, Marquez still stood to gain from a safe second - but instead played all his cards for a stunning first.

Not wanting to get into a battle with Petrucci and take too many risks, Marquez decided he would push for the win - but over only one lap. No last corner lunge and no early fireworks, this was going to be one move and then a final sprint for the line. Taking the lead at Turn 1 on the final lap, that's exactly what the rider from Cervera did - unleashing the fastest lap of the race on the final lap of the race, and over a second clear over the line.

With all three top title challengers lining up on the front row, it was a high stakes game of glory or gravel on the Rimini Riviera - but just sometimes, who dares wins. And Marquez certainly won, going back into the Championship lead but on equal points with Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team). With both on four wins, the number 93 is ahead only by way of having more second place finishes. How close do you like it?

Now it's back from enemy territory and onto home turf at MotorLand Aragon, where Marquez' speed is unmatched - with six pole positions in the last seven years...

"The race was amazing. You can’t imagine the tension and focus, so difficult to keep concentration because the race was so long." Siad Marquez "During the race the feeling was changing, at the start I was struggling more, then I was ok but towards the end is when I felt better."

"Then I started thinking about the Championship and thought second was enough, but then I thought ‘ok, I have the potential to win and I’ll try because you never know if at the end in Valencia you’ll miss those five points".

"During the race I was trying to follow Danilo and other riders because after the Warm up crash…I think that was a good crash, if I hadn’t crashed then I would have crashed in the race." He added

"That gave me a warning. I was just trying to follow Danilo, and then the pass I prepared well. I didn’t want to fight with him here at Misano, I wanted to overtake him and then push for one lap – I didn’t want to risk it for more than one lap, or on the final corner.

"Before the race was so difficult after watching Moto2 and Moto3, because there were so many crashes for the top guys and you know you have to finish the race."

"I knew if I crashed and Dovi finished second or third, the Championship would be difficult. But you need to understand and manage that kind of pressure, which I tried to do and that was the best way."

"Now it’s incredible. The Championship is incredible and you never know what will happen. After the race at Silverstone I was disappointed but it was important to come back strong and for that reason I took the risk, because normally at Misano I struggle a lot."

"Now we got to Aragon and I’ll try to make it. Dovizioso is strong at every circuit and Ducati is strong at every circuit, and it will be tight. And Viñales is not very far off."

Andrea Dovizioso was in contention for the win in the San Marino Grand Prix until the latter stages, but the Italian says his feeling on the bike wasn't good enough to risk everything in a play for the victory.

But less risk meant only marginally less reward, with the rider from Forli crossing the line in third for yet another podium finish - this his first at Misano.

Now 'DesmoDovi' is equal with Marc Marquez on victories and points at the top of the table, but the number four sits second by way of having less second places. It has never been closer, and the Italian knows he can fight for it to the wire.

"I realised in the first few laps it was a very difficult race for me because I didn’t have grip and didn’t know why." Said the championship leader.

"But after Jorge crashed, Danilo and Marc were on the same pace so I was trying to understand if I had a chance to stay there until the end."

"But I didn’t have any better point compared to them to let me fight. It was so easy to make a mistake, today when I was riding I thought ‘this is when it’s more important to take points and not zero’. You have to try, Marc took a lot of risk but he felt good and I didn’t." He added

"I’m not so happy wth the feeling I had and I lost some points, but I’m happy how we confirmed yesterday our speed in the dry."

"I think we have a chance to fight for the Championship. Marc is strong and the next race is Aragon where he’s really fast, but now we’re three in the Championship."

"I’m feeling good and we’ll try until the end. Marc and Honda have confirmed they’re strong at the moment, but so have we - at tracks where we weren't that close in the past." concluded Dovizioso

Pramac Racing ruder Danilo Petrucci  was once again close to winning his first ever MotoGP race at Misano, But the Italian just lost out to an attack from Marc Marquez on the last lap.

So close, and yet so far, it left the Independent Team rider with mixed feelings – but he had led the race for the majority, and took another impressive podium finish in second.

"Mixed feelings. I’m happy to be on the podium again in Italy but I led the race for I don’t know how many laps and was quite scared because we knew from this morning that the track was very slippery." Said the Italian

"After Jorge crashed I tried a lot to push, but with eight laps to go I took a big risk in Turn 6 and thought Marc would pass me. But then after two minutes I realised Marc was too clever to do that and make the rhythm."

"I thought about letting him past but I was scared of losing him, so I tried to stay in front and push with two laps to go…but on the penultimate lap he did a great last corner and passed me at Turn 1." He added

"I tried at Turn 4 but my bike stayed up only because I’m very tall and used my knee! I thought ‘don’t think, just push’. I’m a little bit sad but I’m happy for this second place and he deserved this win today."

"I’m disappointed, but I also say that my best race is the next, so we’ll try again in Aragon. I never thought it would be a flag to flag but when I was behind Marc I did hope he’d go in! I was hoping maybe Marc was thinking about the Championship and he wouldn't attack me…but no"

Marc Marquez timed his attack to perfection to claim victory in a soggy San Marino Grand Prix at Misano and tie with Andrea Dovizioso at the top of the MotoGP championship.

The Spaniard, who topped the morning warm-up but also crash, would make a decisive move on Danilo Petrucci into Turn 1 on the final lap before going on to set the fastest lap of the race on the Honda, giving the Italian no chance to respond on the Pramac Ducati.

It was still a strong ride from Petrucci as he used his well-documented pace in the wet to carve through the field in the early laps in treacherous conditions, passing the three championship contenders and inheriting the lead as Jorge Lorenzo, who jumped ahead from fifth on the grid at the start, crashed his Ducati.

As the circuit improved, however, it was clear Marquez had the edge as he maintained the gap despite Petrucci's best efforts and used his superior pace in the twisty end and start to the lap to move ahead down the inside to claim his fourth win of 2017.

As for main title rival Dovizioso, it appeared the #04 Ducati rider was also biding his time in third as the top three eased away from pole-sitter Maverick Vinales, who dropped down at the start and never had the same pace as those in front. In the final 10 laps, however, the Italian didn't have the pace to keep up with the two out front, settling for third.

Vinales, the only Yamaha racing after home hero Valentino Rossi broke his leg at the start of the week, held off another wet-weather specialist Jack Miller and Cal Crutchlow, who would later fall, to claim fourth.

Michele Pirro, a Ducati tester riding on a wildcard at their home event, would also charge through passing Miller late on for fifth in an excellent ride with the Australian in sixth. Scott Redding was seventh on the second Pramac machine beating Alex Rins on the lead Suzuki by just eight-tenths of a second.

Jonas Folger and Bradley Smith on the KTM completed the top 10 with his teammate Pol Espargaro right behind in 11th. Alvaro Bautista was 12th with Crutchlow getting up after his crash and claiming three points in 13th.

Dani Pedrosa crashed in the morning warm-up and had no confidence in the difficult conditions dropping to the back but would benefit from other incidents in 14th as Johann Zarco's bike appeared to fail on the final lap as he ran over the finish line but dropped from the bottom of the top 10 to the final point in 15th. Loris Baz and Karl Abraham both crashed during the race but continued to reach the chequered flag.
