Williams believes George Russell can develop into a "truly exceptional" driver as he sets eyes on fighting in the midfield next year.

Despite being promoted to Formula 1 as the reigning F2 champion, the Briton was unable to make the same impact as fellow graduates Lando Norris and Alex Albon during 2019.

Indeed, Russell ended the year as the only driver without a point as the British team sat at the back, but his performances, including a 21-0 whitewash of teammate Robert Kubica in qualifying hinted at his potential.

“George has served his first season in Formula 1 in difficult circumstances,” Williams senior engineer Dave Robson said via F1i.com.

“However, his talent, drive and enthusiasm are obvious and it is clear that he has everything he needs to be a truly exceptional F1 driver.

“While he may not appreciate it fully yet, this year may prove to have provided him with some very valuable experience that will pay significant dividends in the future.”

As for what that future holds, in the immediate term the goal is simply to move Williams up from the back of the grid, where they've sat the past two years.

“I’d say success [next year] would be fighting in the midfield,” Russell told Motorsport Week. “Realistically that’s the most we could hope for.

“We’re definitely going to make a big step for next year but we obviously don’t know how much everyone else is going to improve.

“I do definitely believe we’re going to be in the fight next year. It definitely won’t be like it was four or five years ago for the team, but we’ll definitely be in a position that we know every weekend we’ve got a chance of Q2.”

If Williams can, deputy team boss Claire Williams believe the troubles of the past two years will soon be forgotten.

“We have had two difficult years, but two difficult years doesn’t define a team,” she told GPToday.

“What I have seen in this team this year is an extraordinary amount of resilience and tenacity. Also, a willingness to put in the hard work in order to turn things around.

“I’ve always said that work is never going to be the work of a moment. It’s going to take time.

“We have undergone a considerable transformation in the team in the last 14 months, and we are seeing the dividends of that work starting to pay off now.”
