Fernando Alonso and McLaren will team up for a third attempt to conquer the Indianapolis 500 this May, it's been confirmed.
The Spaniard only needs a victory at the Brickyard to join Graham Hill as just the second driver in history to complete motorsport's Triple Crown, but his road to Indy has been more complicated this time around.
Initially, it was believed Alonso was set to join Andretti Autosport, the team he and McLaren partnered for their first trip in 2017.
But two reasons were given for why a deal didn't happen, the first being a veto by engine supplier Honda, who of course have a recent bad history with Alonso, the other came from Michael Andretti just last week, who claimed the two parties simply couldn't come to terms.
He did suspect the 38-year-old had a plan up his sleeve, however, and so it's proven with as he'll join the new Arrow McLaren SP outfit at Indianapolis, this after the British team collaborated with Schmidt Peterson Motorsport.
“I am a racer and the Indy 500 is the greatest race in the world,” said Alonso upon announcing his return.
“I love the incredible fans who make it so special for all of us drivers and make me want to come back. I have maximum respect for this race and everyone who competes in it and all I want to do is race against them and give my best, as always.
“It was important for me to explore my options for this race but Arrow McLaren SP has always been at the top. I have a special relationship with McLaren; we’ve been through a lot together and that creates a bond, a loyalty that is strong.”
Despite their past, Alonso may have been slightly wary of teaming up with McLaren after last year they failed to qualify for the race, after a crash and operational issues left their standalone entry struggling for pace.
One key difference this time though is the partnership with an already established IndyCar team in SPM.
“I am impressed with how the new organisation and operation is developing into a strong package with the Chevrolet partnership,” Alonso added.
“The team has experienced, well-qualified people and great resources, and I’m confident we can be competitive.”
This reuniting between Fernando and McLaren comes after an ambassadorial role the Spaniard had held since leaving his F1 seat in 2018 ended last month.
But CEO Zak Brown quickly welcomed him back.
“We’ve always said we’re open to running Fernando in a third car for the 500, so we’re delighted he’s decided to join us,” said the American.
“Fernando is one of the greatest drivers in the sport and it’s fantastic to have him as part of the team.”
