Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi is having a more difficult weekend at the German GP following his win at Assen last time out, and the nine-time World Champion has qualified ninth on the grid after a wet Q2.

Struggling more at the track in the conditions compared to at the Dutch GP, the Italian says in the dry the situation isn't as difficult - but that he'll be looking for some final modifications ahead of lights out for the race.

"It‘s been a difficult weekend so far. It happened a lot of times this year: the feeling with the bike and especially with the tyres changed a lot from one track to the other." Said the doctor

"This makes it always a big surprise, sometimes positive, sometimes negative. In the dry I'm not so bad, it's nothing fantastic, but my pace is not so far from the front, but unfortunately in the wet I suffer more."

"It looks like all the Yamahas, except Folger who isn't so bad, suffer in the wet." He surmised "We didn't expect it, because last week in Assen I was competitive in the wet, but it looks like this time it's more difficult, so we need to try some modifications for tomorrow and try to be stronger."

In a frantic dash for the line, Franco Morbidelli stole pole position from his team mate Alex Marquez at the very last moment. Although Morbidelli sat in pole during the closing minutes, Marquez swept in to claim it for himself. But on the chequered flag, Morbidelli stole it back with a time almost half a second quicker.

Conditions were sketchy, as the heavens opened once more upon the beginning of the session. Around 10 minutes in, it looked as if the session could be over no sooner than it had begun. But once the rain had stopped, the Moto2 boys came back out and a drying line began to appear on track.

Another rider out to impress in front of his home crowd is Sandro Cortese, who has had a hit and miss season so far. He rounds out the front row in 3rd.

'King of the Ring' Marc Marquez has taken his 8th consecutive pole at the Sachsenring. After taking the top spot in FP4 from Pedrosa and Bautista, Marquez bit back to take another pole.

Danilo Petrucci looked certain to be the pole sitter, as he provisonally sat there for the majority of the session. As the rain started to come down harder times began to slow, but nobody could stop Marquez for doing what he does best around this track.

Petrucci had to come through Q1, as did Pol Espargaro who made a shock appearance into Q2 on his factory KTM. Both did exceptionally well, with Petrucci adding another front row start (2nd) to his arsenal, with Pol heading up the third row in 7th in front of his brother Aleix.

The Movistar Yamaha duo of Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales struggled. While both were in Q2, they could only manage 9th and 11th. Andrea Dovizioso - who won last time out in Assen and again in Catalunya only managed to muster up a 10th place start, while his team mate Jorge Lorenzo who notoriously struggles in wet conditions will start from 6th.
